“In Defense of Public Education: Fund Schools, Not War!”

With schools closing and school budgets being slashed across the country, a debate on our priorities is critical. The “In Defense of Public Education: Fund Schools, Not War!” Toward this end, this forum will examine our nation’s spending priorities and our commitment to education.

Panel members will discuss: federal, state and local spending on education versus spending on military programs; the crisis in education; violence in schools and in the world; solutions and models for change; and actions we can take.

Speakers will include:

• David A. Burress, Ph.D., retired KU Professor/Researcher at the Institute for Public Policy and Business Research and currently President, Ad Astra Institute
• Amy McAninch, Ph.D., Associate Professor of Education, Rockhurst University;
• Occso Bolton, former Kansas City gang leader turned gang / violence prevention leader and youth empowerment advocate and consultant;
• Cris Mann, K-12 Special Education teacher and community activist
