At the heart of Quaker faith is the belief that there is something of God — the seed of God — in all people. With that in mind, it is easy to see the path laid out before us, and it is a path that all of the Quaker testimonies point toward. Peace, Simplicity, Equality, Integrity. The testimonies are not creeds, but rather descriptions of committed actions.
THE PEACE TESTIMONY: The Society of Friends is one of the historic peace churches, along with the Mennonites and the Church of the Brethren. The Peace Testimony is not all about the negatives (not taking up arms, for instance, or not striking out in anger). The testimony is a call to action, and we actively work for peaceful solutions. The testimony began as an adherence to Christian scripture. Early Quakers recognized that all violence, even that which is done in selfdefense, was damaging to the soul. The Declaration of 1660 summed it up: “We utterly deny all outward wars and strife and fightings with outward weapons, for any end or under any pretence whatsoever, and this is our testimony to the whole world. … The spirit of Christ, which leads us into all Truth, will never move us to fight and war against any man with outward weapons, neither for the kingdom of Christ nor for the kingdoms of this world.” The testimony plays a role not limited to world wars and violent conflicts; it has applications to our lives every day as well. Quakers live in the real world, and the peace testimony guides us, and through us it becomes an expression of the acceptance of an inner conviction that violence will not achieve the ends that we seek. It is an expression, a statement of conviction, that we recognize that of God in all people and the presence of God in all situations. In practice, we breathe the testimony in our everyday choices.
